The artists in this exhibition - Sarah Amos, Beth Dary, Kathleen Kucka, and Susan Schwalb - have dedicated their careers to exploring various abstract aesthetics through different techniques and materiality. Their processes are universal and have transcended the ages and, in some instances, bridged the utilitarian spheres into the fine arts realm. Themes that preoccupy their formal artistic investigations include repetition, cultural rituals, complexity, natural systems and the role humans play on all of these, directly or indirectly.

Whisper, a solo online exhibition by Susan Schwalb, comprises a series of works from nearly 50 years of the artist's practice. Spanning from the 1970s to 2025, this digital presentation combines minimalistic compositions of narrow lines and geometric patterns alongside abstract works that discover the expressive nature of silverpoint, which Schwalb has come to master.

Drawn from The Courtauld’s significant collection of post-war art, this Project Space display will examine forms of abstraction which emerged in Europe and America in the 1950s and 1960s. It will explore the radical approaches towards non-representational image making and experimentation with techniques and materials that characterised the work of artists including Philip Guston, Jean Dubuffet, Joseph Beuys, and Susan Schwalb. Running alongside the Gallery’s main exhibition, Abstract Erotic: Louise Bourgeois, Eva Hesse, Alice Adams, this display will contribute to a summer season of abstraction at The Courtauld.
